This exhibition will showcase the work produced by the four makers resident on the final year of the Elements of Change project.
Elements of Change is a unique three year residency project led by Develop Craft Ayrshire. The project is funded by the Scottish Arts Council National Lottery, the European Regional Development Fund, North and East Ayrshire Councils and Argyll and the Islands Enterprises.
Each of the four makers works with a school one day a week over a period of ten months, whilst the other four days the makers are situated in studios within North Ayrshire’s Wasp studios in Irvine and at Dean Castle Country Park, Kilmarnock.
The Elements of Change project supports the professional development of the makers, affording them the time to experiment, evaluate, research and pursue new ideas, furthering the development of their professional practice.
This project is jointly funded by East Ayrshire Council, North Ayrshire Council, Argyll & Islands Enterprises and is run by the Develop Craft Ayrshire project. Each year the project culminates in an exhibition of the makers work, and an exhibition of work the children have produced in collaboration with their respective makers.
The four makers taking part in Elements of Change 3 include:-
Hanne Mannheimer
Hanne works with clay taking inspiration from the worn landscapes of her native country Sweden. She creates forms by throwing and hand-building techniques, but mainly press moulding her simple cylindrical vessels. Hanne’s work is also very much to do with surface qualities and mark making, using her forms very much as canvasses.
Gilly Langton
Gilly is a jewellery designer with an architecturally inspired aesthetic that naturally revels in smooth shape and elegant form. Clean modernist lines contrast with the fine human craftsmanship and subtle detailing that is intrinsic in all of her designs.
Suilven Plazalska
Suilven works primarily with plastics and recycled materials using unusual materials such as drinking straws and rubber balloons. Her work challenges the notions of what is precious and encourages the use of accessible, everyday, and inexpensive materials.
Alison Macleod
Alison is inspired by found objects and collections of old objects in junk shops or attics. For many people the memory of someone or a time past can be retained within a possession. An indirect beauty is held in the sacred nature of these belongings. It is my aim to translate these uniquely precious qualities in jewellery.
Workshops will be held in conjunction with the exhibition. Please contact Hazel Townsend, Craft Development Officer on 01563 554341 for more information.

This exhibition will showcase work produced by the schools in the final year of the Elements of Change Project.
Elements of Change is a unique three year residency project led by Develop Craft Ayrshire. The project hopes to instil an understanding of craft and its use as a vehicle for self expression and to allow children of school age in Ayrshire access to, and participation in the crafts.
The project is funded by the Scottish Arts Council National Lottery, the European Regional Development Fund, North and East Ayrshire Councils and Argyll and the Islands Enterprises.
Makers worked with a wide range of pupils, including, this year, eleven primary schools and two secondary schools. Schools involved this year include:- Kilmarnock Academy, Arran High School, Nether Robertland Primary, Fairlie Primary, Skelmorlie Primary, Cumbrae Primary, and seven primary schools on Arran including Brodick, Pirnmill, Kilmory, Shiskine, Corrie, Whiting Bay and Lamlash.
Over 350 pupils have been involved in the project this year.
The Elements of Change project allows pupils exposure to high quality specialist makers and materials. It offers the pupils an opportunity to gain an awareness and understanding of the design process and the work of a contemporary maker. The project also promotes the development of pupils’ creativity and self-expression while encouraging teaching staff to develop new skills to enhance their previous knowledge and awareness of creative design processes and techniques. Teachers’ involvement in the project will insure a sustainable knowledge and skill base for pupils in the future.
